Even though we love the idea that all kids love to read, some don't. We want all children to be glowing with joy when they get a new book, even if it takes a little bit longer for some. Today, we wanted to share with you a few ways to get your child interested in reading. It is absolutely fine if they don't like to read, but most of the time this is because they haven't found the right way to do it yet. This is where we come in!
You know that song lyric, 'I guess it's half timing, and the other half's luck'? Well that is basically true for everything and this is no exception. Most people like to read before bed, but that isn't always the best time for everyone. Your child just might not like to read before bed. So, if this is the case, why not try reading a book with them in the morning, or after a nap? It doesn't matter what time of the day they read, just that they are enjoying it.
A very common reason why children are sometimes reluctant to read is because it can sometimes be difficult for them to sit still for that long. It is totally normal for some kids to want to run around all day, they just have a lot of energy! Try out interactive reading and get your child excited about a new book. Act out scenes together. If the book says jump, then jump! Keeping reading time fun is key to a happy booklover.
Your children admire you, even when it seems like they are actively trying to do the opposite of what you are saying! Seeing you enjoy a book might make them want to read more. Buy a book that you love, get excited about it and show them that it is ok to love reading. Let them see how much you love books and they will look up to you and know that reading can be a fun enjoyable thing to do.
The most common reason why some kids don't like to read, is because they are being forced to read books they have no interest in. Finding the right book is key. Learn you child's interests and ask them what kind of books they would be excited to read. There's no use trying to get them to read a book about space if they are interested in animals! Everyone has a topic that they love and with a some help and guidance, your little one will find the perfect book for them.
Never give up
Linking to the point above, finding a book that your child may be interested in can be tough, but never give up, no matter how long it takes. Sometimes just by stepping back and letting them take the lead, you'll be surprised by what you find. Everything worthwhile takes a little time!
