About Judit Matthews

2019, Judit Matthews illustrated 'The Daring Droplets' Diary', this then led to her also illustrating 'The Wilful Wildflowers And The Golden Petal' in 2020. Ever since then, Judit's fabulous illustrations for our Survival Super Squad books have been loved by many and most of all loved by us! Here, you will get a deeper look into some of the many reasons why Judit Matthews is such a great artist.

Hungarian Heritage

Judit is Hungarian born but now lives in the UK. She was born in Szeged, the third largest city in Hungary, in 1975. After leaving school, she came to England as an au pair in her gap year in 1994. She is now married to her husband Jim and they have two wonderful children, Harry and Emma. Judit now works from her home studio in Banstead where she illustrates our fab Survival Super Squad Books.

Judit's work is exciting and unique with lots of detail in an illustrative style. Her inspiration comes from paper cutting artists, British wildlife, the seaside and her Hungarian heritage with rich folk art. You can see throughout our books how her inspirations, specifically the British wildlife and the seaside, have been used. She also loves pattern and colour, which shows with the brilliant way she combines colours in her illustrations.

Her Mediums

There are many ways Judit shows her artistic skills, but these days her favourite mediums are pen and ink with some watercolour wash. She enjoys drawing natural, organic forms and uses them as patterns. She likes to simplify shapes and not pay too much attention to scale or the real colour. She paints whimsical, quirky pictures with animals, creating a story. You can see all of the wonderful ways she uses her artistic talents in the books!

As a member of the Tadworth Art Group, Judit exhibits her work there twice a year, in May and November. Her pictures are available in various art galleries and she also takes part in Surrey Artists' Open Studios every year. She has taken part in Channel 4's Watercolour Challenge in 2001 and her artwork was displayed at The Mall Gallery in 2002. Her work has also appeared in The Artist and The Leisure Painter Magazines.

Lastly, Judit loves passing her enjoyment in art to others by running monthly workshops and also does online classes on Saturday mornings. We at Survival Super Squad are so thrilled and excited that we have Judit illustrating our books. From 'The Daring Droplets' Diary' to 'The Wilful Wildflowers And The Golden Petal', we can't wait to see what her illustrations bring next! Visit Judit's website here to find out more.
